The University of Nevada, commonly known as simply UNR, is a university in Reno, which is the county seat of Washoe County, as well as the 4th most populated city in Nevada, having a population estimated at a number of nearly 220 000 inhabitants. Reno is also known as `The Biggest Little City in the World`, and it is famous for its casinos, and due to the fact that it is the birthplace of the gaming corporation Harrah’s Entertainment.
UNR was founded in 1874, in Elko, NV, by the Nevada State Constitution, being moved to its present location in Reno, NV, 11 years later. The university offers programs in journalism, agricultural research, animal biotechnology, business administration, as well as programs in natural sciences, such as seismology, being classified by the Carnegie Foundation for Advancement of Education, as a Comprehensive Doctoral Research University with medical and/or veterinary medicine.
UNR’s Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism produced 6 Pulitzer Prize winners, the university having 16 clinical departments and 5 nationally recognized basic science departments. UNR is also home of the University Of Nevada School Of Medicine, founded in 1969, as well as of the only Judicial College in the United States, which was founded in 1963.
The athletic teams from UNR are known as the Nevada Wolf Pack, who participates in the NCAA Division I for all sports, FBS for football and in the Western Athletic Conference, being best known for their achievements in men’s basketball and football, in which they’ve experienced success many times in the past years. In 2004, the men’s basketball team qualified for the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the Sweet Sixteen, for the 1st time in school history.
